If I proceed with a claim for mesothelioma, will I actually get any money? Or will it all go to the lawyers and medical doctors? I'm not wanting to be greedy here, but I have to admit that I would like to know. And I just don't want some lawyer to take advantage of me!

I assume you have a diagnosis of mesothelioma.

You and your attorney negotiate the terms of his/her representation. A common amount is 1/3 of the gross settlement plus reimbursement for whatever out of pocket costs the attorney incurs.

Whether you have to reimburse hospitals and physicians out of the proceeds of your verdict/settlement depends on who is paying the bills right now. If your insurer asserts a lien on the proceeds, that amount is capped by statute in many states. Additionally, your attorney can negotiate the amounts of the liens downward.

The short answer is, if you can show causation (i.e. what company's products caused you to develop cancer) and you obtain a recovery, you will likely get money. Usually the recovery is substantial enough to make it worth your while. But the devil is in the details and that depends on many different factors.
