The rules and procedures to file a divorce vary from state to state. I recommend contacting a local attorney who can help you with the matter. If you cannot afford an attorney, here are some other possible options:
    1. Call your local BAR Association and ask them for a referral to a free legal clinic
    2. Contact your local court house and they me be able to give you the paperwork to start a divorce proceeding
    3. You can generally find the rules to file a divorce in a specific state by researching the matter online, such as using google.com and typing in "divorce process in (state here)"

Thank you for the excellent advice. I have a friend that is about to go down that road also, and I will absolutely share with her the information about the free legal clinic. Depending on the people involved, and the level of emotion, this would seem like one place you would really want an attorney to represent your side. I hope things run smoothly for you.

I went through a divorce last year so I know what you are going through. I was able to obtain a lot of information online and did also seek the counsel of an attorney at a local legal clinic. Definitely ask a lot of questions, especially before you sign any paperwork.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I did a lot of internet searching today and wrote down a ton of questions. A friend of mine has recommended a lawyer and I am meeting with him next week.

I think one thing that you need to ask yourself is, are you sure you are doing this as a last resort after all other efforts have been futile? I know divorces are ugly but sometimes that is the only path left.

Unfortunately it is. We have tried to make it work for several years especially since we have kids together. We finally decided that divorce was the best option. I just hope it does not turn ugly!

Well, I have seen couples really struggle in marriage until divorce was the only thing left. Amina, I hope you will be happy after all this and I wish you well/
