    Fathers and Automatic Custody

I was watching a television show about teen parents and one of the girls on the show seemed to think that she had full rights to her child even though the father's name was on the birth certificate. She said that what she said was law and he could only the see the child when she said so. This cant be true, can it?

Not knowing if they ever went to court I really don`t know if she is right. When I was with my 11 year old daughters dad, there were no custody papers. We had a fight and the police were called. They did tell me that usually the mother is considered the legal custodian but they also told me that because he is on the birth certificate that he could take her and I could do nothing about it.

Times have changed. All the father has to do is file papers with the court and that will bring about a hearing, as I understand it. If he's the father, he has rights. If the mother goes against what the court orders, she could actually lose custody.

It doesn't sound right to me. I agree with Reed that the father has rights and if he goes to court and isn't deemed harmful for the child, he is going to be able to have some sort of custody or visitation. Women no longer get custody just because they are mothers. Fathers have rights too.
