    un-paid trial period of work is this legal

    my 16 year old daughter applied for a part-time job in our local chemists shop. she was asked to come back the following day to do a trial shift 9am till 1pm. when she finished at the end of this shift she was told she would have to do more short shifts on a trial basis to assess her suitability for the job. she was then told by the owner that this would be un-paid until she was satisfied that my daughter was a suitable candidate for the job. is this legal

    There are many scams where employers try to get free labor by having unpaid trial periods at work. A JobWatch survey showed that in only 13% of cases of people doing unpaid trial work, was a paid position offered after the completion of an unpaid trial.
