Tickets issued by a 'hiding' cop

In my area there are many unlit areas where policemen will sit at night, and some areas during the day that are hidden
by trees until you are right next to the spot. I am aware that tickets are issued when a driver was doing something in
violation of the law. Is it okay for a cop to 'hide' in these spots where drivers are not able to see them and then give a
    driver a citation?

I think it is totally okay for cops to hide. I always heard the law where I was is that they have to be viewable from one side of the road or the other. I don't see why it wouldn't be okay.
