Video: How much will divorce cost? Why should I consider Mediation?

    • San Diego divorce lawyers answer your legal questions in their new video series Family Law Q&A. This week they provide information on how much a client can expect a divorce to cost him or her. The attorneys warn that no legal professional can provide you with a realistic estimate, as cost is largely driven by the manner in which the two parties choose to approach their divorce. A combative approach wherein the two spouses refuse to address the other's needs will typically prolong itself the longest, thus paying the price to divorce the longest. The quicker and smoother the divorce, the more likely it is to have been more cost efficient. Out of the three main methods to divorce (litigation, mediation, and negotiation), mediation is the least expensive. The primary cost reduction comes from having to employ only one professional. A mediator facilitates an agreement between the two parties, essentially conducting a divorce tightly delineated by the soon-to-be-ex spouses, without additional court involvement.
