What state are you located in? Also, when you're asking how long you can do probate, what are you referring to? Do you want to keep an estate in probate? Most people want to get this over with, but I'm assuming that you have unresolved issues that you want to make sure are handled before it goes out of probate. Can you explain a bit more about the advantages that you're trying to preserve while the estate is in probate?

I've heard of cases where an estate remains in probate for years, but knowing more about your specific situation will help me give you better information about this. Naturally, getting a good estate lawyer in your local area would be to your advantage because they will be familiar with the procedures and inclinations of your local probate court.

There can be a limit to how long you have to probate an estate or will after someone dies. A typical probate can last about a year, but can go on for years in complex cases. A probate attorney or your local probate court will have more info.
