    When a person dies and doesn't leave a will, is there estate then distributed evenly among family members? Or does it go to charity?

    States may have different laws on this, but I have always believed that it goes to closest family member, spouse and then children. That's why some families end up in court. It's so important to have a will; at the very least to have something written out on paper.
