    Guardianship

When I was a kid my mother sent me to live with her ex-husband, my half-sister's father (my step-dad at one time). She sent me with just a notarized handwritten letter that said he was responsible for making my decisions and enrolling me in school. Now that I look back on it that seems very strange that no court was involved. Was that legal?
